জেমি লী কার্টিস, ড্যানিয়েল ক্রেগ, টোনি কোলেট, ক্রিস এভানস | এনাদের মতো অতি প্রখ্যাত কিছু অভিনেতা যখন পরিচালক এর প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়ে, সাধারণত আমি সেটা সেই পরিচালকের অক্ষমতার একটি ছোট্ট নিদর্শন বলেই মেনে নিয়ে থাকি | আমার সেই অনুমান যে পরে আমার অনুতাপে পরিণত হবে, তা জনসন বাবু আমাকে আস্তে আস্তে বোঝাতে থাকেন | হাস্যরস ও গভীর রহস্যে মোড়া ছবিটি, মনের গভীরে উষ্ণতা জাগিয়ে তুলতে অচিরেই সক্ষম ||
গল্প শুরু হয় হ্যাঁ, একটি খুন দিয়ে | হারলান থ্রোম্বই নামক এক রহস্য উপন্যাস রচয়িতা যার নাম ডাক ও খ্যাতির অভাব না ঘটলেও, যার পরিবারের সকলে হয় কপট নয় লম্পট, ও সকলেই লোভী এবং স্বার্থপর | মিস্টার হারলান থ্রোম্বই আকস্মিক মৃত্যু ঘটে, এবং সমস্ত সন্দেহ গিয়ে পড়ে তার নার্স ও একমাত্র সঙ্গী মারটা-র উপর | বলাবাহুল্য মাতা একটি অদ্ভুত উপসর্গ ভোগে | মিথ্যে বললেই তার বমি করার প্রবনতা জাগে | মারটা চরিত্র বেশ দক্ষতার সাথে পেশ করেছেন ||
রহস্য থাকলেই তা ভেদ করার প্রয়োজন হয়ে পরে | গোয়েন্দাকে তো আসন গ্রহণ করতেই হবে | ড্যানিয়েল ক্রেগ উপস্থিত হলেন নামে গোয়েন্দা বেনোয়িট ব্ল্যান্স রূপে | থ্রোম্বই পরিবারের লোকজন সত্যের ধার ধারতে নারাজ, মিথ্যে টা বেশ গুছিয়ে পরিবেশন করেন; মেরুদন্ড বিশেষ্যের বিলুপ্তিতে যতটা প্রয়োজন হয় আরকি |ড্যানিয়েল ক্রেগ বরাবরের ভালো অভিনেতা, চরিত্র গঠন করতে ও তা বহন করে নিয়ে চলতে তিনি বরাবর সক্ষম হয়ে থাকেন | তার ব্যতিক্রম ঘটেনি এই ছবিতে, তবুও একজন ফরাসি গোয়েন্দার ভাষায়, আধভাঙ্গা দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার টানের প্রয়োজন যে খুব একটা ছিল আমার সেটা মনে হয় না ||
মিস্টার জনসন বেশ নিপুণভাবে এক একটি চরিত্র নির্মাণ করেছেন | ছবি যত অগ্রসর হয় ততই প্রত্যেকটি চরিত্রের নতুন দিক আমাদের কাছে খুলে দাঁড়ায় | জনসন তার দর্শকদের উৎসুক রেখেও হাস্যরসে ভরিয়ে রাখতে অত্যন্ত সক্ষম | অভিনেতারা কেউ নিরাশ করেননি; অভিনয়, ডায়লগ নির্মাণ ও প্রক্ষেপণ সবটাই প্রশংসা জনক ||
রায়ান জনসন ছবিতে নিজের প্রতিচ্ছবি ফেললেও, আগাথা ক্রিস্টি রয়ে গেছেন গল্পটির গভীর অংশে | তার প্রধান কারণ হলো যে, যদিও আমরা রহস্য-রোমাঞ্চ দেখতে গিয়ে, খুন, রাহাজানি, ছিনতাই ইত্যাদি আশা করি এবং সেই দাবি পরিচালক মেটান-ও; গল্পের অন্তরে রয়ে গেছে ক্রিস্টির নরম একটি দয়ালু মন | গোয়েন্দা বেনোয়িট ব্ল্যান্স এবং নার্স মার্তা সাহায্যে, মিস্টার জনসন আমাদের কাছে খুব সুন্দর একটি বার্তা পৌঁছে দেন; জীবন বড় কঠিন বড় নির্মম | সেই অনায্য কঠিনতা সহ্য করে কোমল হওয়া শুধু শক্ত নয় সে প্রায় অসম্ভব | সেই অসম্ভবকে জয় করা বীরত্বের পরিচয় | সেই অসম্ভবের খোঁজ যেন আমরা সকলে সেই অসম্ভবের খোঁজ যেন আমরা সকলে পাই ||
## KNIVES OUT
As someone who grew up devouring Mystery Novels, obsessed with all sorts of thrillers that would hit
either the bookstores or the theatres, Agatha Christie, quite naturally, remains till date, a big part my
ever so curious mind. When Knives Out released in the theatres, the mystery lover part of my aura
reignited with a burning passion of having to watch it instantly, and in I went, expecting murder, thrill,
and gore. Little did I know that Director Rian Johnson had so much more in store for me.
Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette, Chris Evans. The star studded cast which previously made
me apprehensive about the standards of directorial prowess, later left me in awe, sides aching with
laughter issuing from recurrent puns and just a warm warm heart.
The story starts with, yes, you guessed it right, a murder; the death of a famous mystery novelist Harlan
Thrombey, who left behind a joke of a family, all pompous, all self-important and every single one of
them mooching off of their incessantly rich father. The only sane-ish person seems to be the nurse,
Marta, played by Ana de Armas, in her biggest on-screen role till date. I say sane-ish because she pukes
whenever she lies, and being an outsider and prime suspect of the murder, she gave away to most of
the mystery, or as it would seem.
Enter Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc along with two almost forgettable policemen, seeming
rather work-a-day in his profession. Blanc trusts nobody, since no one is to be trusted, and all are
freeloading liars. Craig does a fairly good job as Detective Blanc, clearly enjoying every bit of his
character (after a string of Bond movies that he constantly complains about) even though the accent
seems forced at times.
Every character in the movie acted the way one would expect them to and yet not quite, the story
seemed so obvious and yet completely unpredictable. Rian Johnson plays fast and loose with the
storyline, fuzzying with a crafty hand the line between genres. The experience was both refreshing and
challenging, weighing in wry humor in excellent word-play and performance. Everyone stood their
ground as actors, some more than others and there is very little disappointment throughout.
Even though Johnson has written and directed a unique American Mystery whodunit, the essence of the
cinema remains Christie’s. That is primarily because, amidst all the slashed throats, arson, stabbing,
games, thwart and thrill of a good mystery, to side-splitting uproar, the story weaves around kindness.
Amidst all the brilliance from A-list American actors and their cunning portrayal Johnson uses Blanc and
Marta to leave you with a beautiful message; that in the face of all that is unfair, unkind and harsh, in
the face of gut-wrenching (read: puking) life itself, being kind is being brave, and that is worth striving
for.
## I rate the movie a 4.2 out of 5. Running time: 130 Minutes. PG 13 movie (Occasional violence, strong
language and sexual references). And a Must-Watch.
